Fujifilm GFX100 / Fujifilm GFX100S Successors?
It would be great if Sony and Nikon got into the medium format space so as to amp-up competition and thus progress in that space. Fujifilm medium format has stagnated and it shows—though I hope Fujifilm proves me wrong soon. Hasselblad medium format is there, but priced out of reach for too many, and with significant drawbacks.
The Fujifilm GFX100 is now 4 years old without any changes, and the Fujifilm GFX100S is the same technology and two years old. Rumors say an updated model is coming.
Is it going to be an update about video features, worthless to me and everyone I know who uses one?
What might we see if Fujifilm updates them... how about fixing bad firmware for starters?
A higher-res sensor is unlikely given that the lens line is already straining to deliver adequate sharpness to the existing 100MP sensor. To be meaningful, it would have to be 150 megapixels. It would help a little on detail, but mainly reduce artifacts to negligible levels.
But here is what is practical and useful:
- An improved lens line, refreshing the many weak lenses in the lineup, including modern focusing motors like Sony instead of the current mini-hamster-driven system.
- Improved state-of-the-art sensor.
- CFExpress Type Bor CFExpress Type A slots.
- Improved IBIS and hopefully one that doesn’t crap-out in some cases.
- Autofocus that can be relied upon (current AF system is crap-grade).
- State of the art EVF, something as good or better than the Sony A7R V. Higher-res rear LCD would be nice too.
- Much faster processor so that glacially-slow scrolling in taken images can be cured, and as responsive as Sony.
- A Sony-style 4-shot pixel shift with smart (AI?) motion correction done in camera. Or better perhaps, a Panasonic/Leica style multi-shot high-res mode delivering a single DNG.
- Frame averaging delivering a raw file already averaged.
- Intelligent metering eg auto-ETTR.
