I spend my time these days in the Eastern Sierra and Yosemite in the high country*, but first time visitors will want to see the valley area for sure.

* For me at least, the crowding and the sound of buses along even at the top of El Capitan makes the valley as non-wilderness as it gets in Yosemite, making it unattractive to me, not to mention the difficulty and crowding and/or cost of staying over night. But it is beautiful nonetheless.
