One lens I highly recommend is the dirt cheap Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM. I also like the Canon 8-15mm f/4L fisheye because it is unique and a very high quality optic— I could see taking it on a European vacation for example (churches, etc). Also on the “relatively expensive but really good” list are the 24/2.8 IS, 28/2.8 IS, 85/1.8.
Sigma
The new Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM lens is in stock for Canon.
A 300mm f/2.8 is rather limiting, but perhaps the extra zoom range might provide a persuasive reason to carry such a large lens.
Sony NEX
The Sony Alpha NEX-7 digital camera is discounted by $250 down to $948, a bit more with the kit lens.
