D800 — First Examples
See yesterday’s discussion of how I will approach the D800.
I’ve had it for all of 2 hours, but performance is clear. The Nikon D800 sharpness is stunning. It requires a top-notch lens properly focused, but there is absolutely no doubt that the 36MP sensor is a leap forward, a new level of voyeuristic-detail photography!
After letting the battery charge for a time, I went through all the camera settings then stepped into my garage and backyard to teach myself how to use Live View effectively.
My first batch of Nikon D800 example images are test images I shot while learning the camera. Nothing special perhaps, but didactically instructive as to sharpness, color and tone.
Because of the camera resolution, I have provided especially large examples and very generously sized actual pixels crops, so that subscribers can see clearly just how the Nikon D800 performs.
Now I head out to make some more images.
Bookmark and check my Nikon gear page for D800 availability status (updated every 20 minutes, usually more timely than even the B&H notify mails).

Bravo !
You showed the first pictures of the d800 that show the quality it is capable of !
I don not know how the marketing people at Nikon find these ultra bad sample photographers.
Or is the Nikon glass that bad?
The clarity of the images is the first thing that really jumps out and then the dynamic range. Impressive!
Looking forward to see the your next pictures.

Nikon glass is very good to excellent, but I do like that Zeiss 100mm f/2 Makro-Planar. In the 100mm range, my recent comparison in my Zeiss Guide shows just how far superior the Zeiss 100/2 is to the Nikon 105/2.8 VR, at least for work at medium and far distances.
