PowerMac Quad sleep freezes

In a most annoying development, my PowerMac Quad has taken to freezing when entering sleep mode. When I put the computer to sleep, occassionally something goes whacko and about 1-2 minutes later the normally whisper-quiet fans start to ramp up, reaching full speed within 30 seconds or so.  At that point, a hard power-off is the only option.
